Health Care

A Progressive Agenda for the 6th District

Amanda supports single payer health care.

Health care is a right, and Amanda will fight to expand health insurance coverage to all residents of the 6th District.

As a cancer survivor, health insurance and access to health care is personal to Amanda. She understands the need to provide affordable health insurance to people with pre-existing conditions. Amanda strongly opposed TrumpCare, passed by the House of Representatives this year with the support of Peter Roskam, who voted to put partisan politics and corporate profits over the people of the 6th District. Amanda believes TrumpCare and the various other proposals to repeal the Affordable Care Act advanced by the Trump Administration in Congress are harmful because they would result in millions of people with pre-existing conditions losing their health insurance. All of the recent proposals are nothing more than tax cuts for the wealthy paid for by citizens who will lose their health insurance.

The U.S. is the only industrialized country in the world that does not provide basic health care for all. Countries around the world spend less to provide more health care to their citizens; the United States has the most expensive health care in the world, but not the best or most efficient. Amanda believes that we need single payer healthcare. While we cannot get to a single payer system overnight because of opposition from Roskam and Republicans, Amanda supports improving the Affordable Care Act immediately to respond to rising health care costs. We should take lessons from states that have managed these issues, for instance by adopting reinsurance pools to cover higher costs patients.

Amanda will also work to get unrestrained prescription drug costs under control by allowing Medicare to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies and by re-importing drugs from Canada. Amanda believes that no person should go bankrupt when a family member gets sick, no person should be shackled to a job just to keep their health insurance, and the emergency room should not be anyone’s primary medical provider.
